Abubakar lands in prison for 5million Naira car scam

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Kaduna Zonal Command, on July 21, 2022, secured the conviction and sentencing of one Salisu Sambo Abubakar before Justice Daruis Khobo of the kaduna State High Court, sitting in Kaduna on one count charge bordering on cheating.

The charge reads:

“That you, Salisu Sambo Abubakar, sometime in 2016 at Kaduna within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court, did pretend to be a friend to the Managing Director of Nigerian Ports Authority, when you knew you were not and in such assumed character cheated one Dr. Anthony Friday Shamang of the sum of Two Million, Nine Hundred and Forty Thousand Naira(N2,940,000.00), when you claimed that you can assist him in procuring and delivering to him a Toyota Hilux van 2010 model and thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 320(a) of the Penal Code Law Cap 89 Laws of Northern Nigeria, 1963 and punishable under section 322 of the same Law”.

The suspect pleaded guilty to the charge when it was read to him.

Upon his plea, the Prosecution counsel, Nasiru Salele, urged the court to convict the defendant accordingly.

Justice Darius convicted and sentenced the defendant to a fine of N100, 000 or six months imprisonment.

The convict who has restituted the complainant, got into trouble when he convinced the complainant that he could help him purchase a Toyota Hilux Van through the Nigerian Ports Authority for N5m. He was paid N2, 840, 000.00 in two installments and a further N100, 000.00 to convey the vehicle from Lagos to Kaduna. But the wait for the vehicle to be delivered turned futile as the defendant failed to keep his promise to the complainant.
