Fulani-Hausa Community in Calabar, Rivers State have continually flaunted the directive of the Cross River State Governor on the abolishment of the seat of an emir created in the state.
Reports have it that the Fulani-Hausa community in Calabar created an emirate in Calabar and appointed the head of the emirate who is now addressed as the emir of Calabar.
The development is said to have created tension in the region as residents allege that the Fulani-Hausa community claim that the territory of the Fulani extends to the Atlantic Ocean.
During the Sallah festival in Calabar, Alhaji Garba Lawan was enthroned as the new emir of the alleged Calabar emirate following the death of the former emir who happens to be his elder brother.
Interestingly, Alhaji Garba Lawan has continued to parade himself as the emir of Calabar while also being addressed as such by the Fulani-Hausa community in the region.
The development has created tension and attracted criticism from the locals and the traditional leaders of the Calabar community; hence, the intervention of the state government.
The state government is reported to have summoned the alleged Fulani-Hausa leadership in Calabar during which they were sternly warned and directed to abolish the purported seat of the emir of Calabar in the state.
While speaking on the issue, the Permanent Secretary Of Special Services, Governor’s Office, Sir Alfred Mboto stated:
“On no account should any member of the public address any Hausa/Fulani leader as “Emir” in Cross River State.

“This is not acceptable in the state. The state has been known for peace and tranquillity, accommodating and uniting all ethnic nationalities who live in the state.”
He added that no leader of the Fulani-Hausa community in the state should be guarded by armed men, enjoining the community to immediately report any act of illegal activity.
“No leader of the Hausa/Fulani community should be seen with men with swords.
“The leadership of the Hausa/Fulani community must report to the State Government any illegal activities around its environs.”
