Government of Bayelsa state take case of Nambe oil spill to federal government of Nigeria

The Bayelsa State Government, through its Technical Committee on Nembe Oil Spill, has taken its case to the Federal Government of Nigeria, following the failure of the Aiteo Group, the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC), and the National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA), to perform their statutory duties with regard to the massive oil spill which occurred at the Santa Barbara River, Nembe Local Government Area of Bayelsa State In November 2021 by failing to conduct a Post Spill Impact Assessment of the areas impacted by the spill as stipulated by law.
Speaking during its meeting held in Yenagoa on Tuesday, July 19, 2022, the Honourable Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Biriyai Dambo, SAN, who is also the Chairman of the Committee, said the Committee has been invited by the Federal Government to a meeting aimed at exploring ways of finding a solution and an amicable settlement of the issue.
Whilst the Committee will continue to engage with the Federal Government of Nigeria, the Chairman reiterated the position of the State Government to explore all available opportunities and take every necessary step to pursue adequate compensation and secure environmental justice for the people of the impacted communities and itself, and to put an end to the perennial pollution of environment through reckless and irresponsible oilfield practice that is condoned by a weak or compromised regulatory system.
The State Technical Committee on Oil Spill in Nembe Local Government Area was inaugurated on December 15, 2021 by the Governor of the State, His Excellency, Senator Douye Diri, to, as part of its mandate, participate in an immediate Joint Investigation Visit to the incident site at the Santa Barbara River, Nembe, following the oil spillage which had occurred at the Santa Barbara Well-1 of OML 29, operated by Aiteo Eastern Exploration and Production Company Ltd.
In addition to all its previous and ongoing efforts, it is expected that this meeting with representatives of the Federal Government of Nigeria will bring some progress in that direction.
