No Legalizing of artisanal refineries in Nigeria

The Group Chief Executive Officer, Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited, Mele Kyari, has ruled out legalizing artisanal refineries otherwise known as Kpofire.

But Mr. Kyari noted that modular refineries should be encouraged instead of illegal refining which causes a loss of seven hundred thousand barrels per day.

Artisanal oil refining is small-scale crude oil processing ( illegal) or subsistent distillation of petroleum that is often outside the boundaries of state law.

The GMD spoke during an interview on national television on the backdrop of calls by stakeholders in the industry to accommodate artisanal refineries to eradicate soot pollution in Niger Delta.

This Artisanal refineries have cause lost of revenue by the Federal Government of Nigeria due theft of the crude.
