Gubernatorial candidates in Rivers meet for peace and security summit

Rivers Governorship candidates

Today, a peace and security summit was organized and all the governorship candidates contesting election in Rivers State were invited to make commitment and pledge to ensure peace before, during and after the election. Senator Abe, Governorship candidate of Rivers people on the platform of SDP was conspicuously present.

Almost all the gubernatorial candidates in Rivers State including Tonye Cole, Dawari George, Beatrice Itubo, among others attended the event except the Governorship candidate of PDP, Mr Sim Fubara, who was said to have boycotted the peace event.

The candidates were given opportunity to speak and commit to peaceful elections in Rivers State in 2023. It was a great event which didn’t only provide a platform for all gubernatorial candidates to meet at the same event, but they also took turns to speak.

The following are the observations I noted from the event:

1. All the candidates present pledged for peaceful elections in Rivers State which is a good omen for the future of our state, considering the detestable history of violent elections Rivers State has been noted for over the years.

2. Almost all the candidates who spoke found it a bit difficult to consciously acknowledge the presence of their fellow contestants at the beginning of their speeches. Only Senator Abe was different. He acknowledged and mentioned the names of all the candidates present one after the other before speaking at the event. This shows that he has regard for everyone, including his opponents in the election.

3. All the candidates who spoke committed to peace before, during and after the elections in 2023, but none of them gave specific example of their conducts in the past which helped the course of peace and non-violence in elections except Senator Magnus Abe.
