Aleto Oil spill: Rivers state House of Assembly Adhoc Committee submits report

Today, Hon. John Dominic Iderima after careful perusal of the recommendations in the REPORT OF THE AD-HOC COMMITTEE ON THE ALETO CRUDE OIL SPILLAGE, and seeing that it addresses the issues raised by the incident and the petition which was laid before the 10th Assembly, he vehemently joined voice with other colleagues to adopt the Committee's report as presented by the Deputy Speaker and Chairman of the committee, Rt. Hon. Dumle Maol.

The Lawmaker representing Abua/Odual Constituency frowned at SPDC slow response to a critical matter like Oil Spillage that has turned a reccuring decimal in this part of the country, which ought to have been treated as emergency.

He further expressed that despite the nth degree of damages usually caused by the incident, SPDC in most cases will come to say that the Spillage is as a result of sabotage instead of seeing it in the aspect of equipments failure.

Hon. Dominic prayed the recomendations of the adhoc committee sees the light of the day, and adviced that the House via the committee should give proper monitoring of the cleanup and remediation progress, and possibly invite SPDC officials to appear before the House in order to profer measures that will give a lasting solution to this persistent Crude Oil Spillage in our dear State.

He said that communities like Emago Kugbo where he hails from, that has experienced such incidents understands the devastating effects of Oil spillage on health, farm produce and seafoods. Since majority of persons living in the villages depends on farming and fishing for a livelihood, hence; means of livelihood in our rural communities is heavily threatened by the persistent environmental degradation by multinationals.

The Aleto Oil Spillage affects communities in Eleme, Okirika and Obio/Akpor Local Government Areas of Rivers State.
