Zamfara state governor Bello Mattawale has directed that henceforth no traditional ruler should bestow chieftaincy title to anyone without due approval from the state government.

This is coming as an Emir bestowed a title to a notorious repentant bandit as Sarkin Fulani meaning leader of Fulani, which the people of the state and other citizens of Nigeria condemned.

The statement was read by the governor's spokesman as follows:

“All Emirs, Senior District Heads and District Heads in the state are hereby directed to officially seek permission from the State Government before conferring traditional titles to anyone.

“The directive becomes necessary in order to check indiscriminate award and possible abuse of the traditional institution.

“Henceforth, no Emir, Senior District Head or District Head must appoint anybody into any traditional office without securing official permission and clearance from the state Government.

“Compliance to this directive is now mandatory and failure to it will attract serious reprimand from the state Government”

meanwhile the governor suspended the emir that conferred the chieftaincy title to the repentant bandit and  a committee was set up to investigate the circumstances leading to the action of the Emir.
